As a team leader, it's important to revisit the vision and mission of what we're trying to accomplish. My friend Joe Haskamp, who runs a roofing company, does an amazing job in the hiring process to ensure that new hires understand they're not just roofers, but people committed to raising money for veterans using their roofing skills. Joe hires people like the third bricklayer in the story below!
The story of three bricklayers is a powerful parable that illustrates the importance of seeing beyond our immediate task and understanding the larger purpose of our work. After the great fire of 1666 that leveled London, Christopher Wren was commissioned to rebuild St Paul’s Cathedral. One day in 1671, he observed three bricklayers on a scaffold, one crouched, one half-standing and one standing tall, working very hard and fast. When asked what they were doing, the first bricklayer responded, “I’m a bricklayer. I’m working hard laying bricks to feed my family.” The second bricklayer replied, “I’m a builder. I’m building a wall.” But the third brick layer, the most productive of the three and the future leader of the group, replied, “I’m a cathedral builder. I’m building a great cathedral to The Almighty.” Let's take a page out of Joe's book and strive to hire and cultivate team members who see the bigger picture and are committed to our shared vision. Share this story at your next team meeting and let's continue to build something great together. - Bill Storm If you liked this message, you'll love our group for CEOS and team leaders that are looking for new and innovative ways to build winning teams. https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13030269/
