I've been blessed and fortunate in my life to have been able to work with some of the most recognizable names in the industry. I worked with Tony Robbins as a Peak Performance Strategist and member of his elite speaking team and with the John Maxwell Leadership Team as a Team Building Specialist. But the leadership lessons that have had the biggest impact on me came from an unlikely source- my martial arts instructor, who was also my boss and mentor. This takes us back to the late 80’s and early 90’s when my journey in leadership began to take shape. Today I’d like to share three keys that made my teacher a world-class team leader and visionary. Hopefully, they will have as big an impact on you as they did on me. Key #1: A VISION AND A MISSION The first thing I observed about my mentor was that he had a VISION and a MISSION. He saw himself as a developing CEO of a world-class organization, changing people's lives through the martial arts. And because he thought of himself that way, he also made it known that we were members of the board, not just employees or staff members. He gave us leadership roles and responsibilities that were vital to the success of the mission and vision. Key #2: REPETITION IS THE MOTHER OF SKILL Number two is REPETITION. Repetition is the mother of skill according to Tony Robbins. Benjamin Franklin once said, "If you tell me, I'll forget. If you show me, I may remember, but if you involve me, I'll understand." That’s a principle my teacher understood well; he involved us in the process, from the numbers that we used to measure the business to the deliverables and promises we made to our members. When we had our team meetings, we called them “Boardroom” meetings, it wasn't a meeting where he talked, and we listened; he involved us in the learning process. We held our Boardroom meetings twice a week, every week. So, during the year, meeting twice a week, we got in one hundred reps. If you're trying to develop a winning team, it's not going to happen by accident. You must be intentional about it. Champions don’t become champions by chance; they are conditioned to win through constant repetition. It's just like going to the gym. If you go to the gym once and lift some weights, you're not going to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. My instructor understood this and gave us every opportunity to learn and grow, personally and professionally, to which I am eternally grateful. Key #3: SYSTEMS DRIVEN Number three is SYSTEMS. He had a structured system on how to produce A-rated black belts on and off the mats. Each of us went through the system as a student. We were products of the product. We believed in the product, and we believed in a system that is still in use to this day! Bill Storm P.S. If you like today's message, here are 5 ways I can help you grow faster…
